Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
