Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
