The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
