Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
