Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
